Which HAL to use in migrating a physical partition?

I've read http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Migrate_Windows and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309283 , but now I think I've confused myself and I can't seem to find any information to help me get unstuck here. I have a Dell Optiplex 745 with a C2D using an existing Windows partition that I'd like to migrate to a VDMK image to use under Ubuntu from time to time. So I looked under Device Manager and it states that I'm currently using Hal.dll, but according to what I've read, it would seem I should use Halaacpi.dll given my configuration. Is that correct? Does it really matter if I use one over the other?

You don't say which version of Windows you're planning to migrate.
The instructions seem to be for XP or W2K3.
As a warning, I tried this for a W2K-SP4 instance (including the MergeIDE
utility which is not meant for W2k) and ended up with a corrupt and
unrecoverable registry and an unbootable system.
I'd recommend that before you start, make sure you have a very
good backup that you are absolutely, completely, sure you can
recover everything from. If I was doing this again, I'd buy a new disk,
then image-copy the existing implementation onto it. Even if you
don't need to recover, you can never have too much storage.
