Hi Rick,

K3b should work within Ubuntu, so this is very strange to me. Have you checked the Ubuntu forums?

Personally, I'm suspicious of Sony hardware, especially since the DRM debacle a year or so back. I wouldn't be surprised if there was something in the CD burner that hindered making copies - or am I just being paranoid?

I haven't had any problems with USB connections in VBox as long as I didn't enable the second (bottom) USB option for USB 2.0 support. I can't explain why, but when I turn it off, the USB stuff works perfectly.

Best of luck with your further efforts.

Hey Ted,

Yep, spent a lot of time looking lots of places in the past few days. Man, this is work!

Anyway, I finally having XP "seeing" my Brother printer via USB. When XP boots up, it automatically asks me for the location of the driver. XP is looking for a PPD file so it can load up the necessary drivers to make the printer work. From what I remember, PPD file used to be linux/unix file but that was a while back so not sure what it means anymore. This is NOT a PS printer so I'm wondering if Ubuntu supports non PS printers. It would appear that XP running on VM needs a linux/unix driver in order to print. Maybe there is some type of emulator that can fool it into thinking it can print. Not sure about that one yet. A search on Brothers website did not turn up a file with exact name XP is asking for but Brother has lots of files that are executables, etc so the file I am looking for could be buried down deep enough that I can't find it using a simple find command. I have sent an email to Brother asking where to find it. I can't imagine that XP would ask for a specific file name if it didn't exist somewhere......

Personally, I think a healthy dose of skepticism is not a bad thing. Sony did get some bad press which was (most likely) deserved. But I can't think of a single Sony product of any type that I would look at and say "Man, that thing is real junk"! Most of Sonys products are pretty decent or lets say, that has been my experience with them. I have used this drive to burn all my music mp3s, etc and the only thing I can say about it is that it works extremely fast compared to my last unit.

Anyway that PLUS $5 will get you a Starbucks......and don't forget the $5!

Still struggling with Linux. Man, this is a humbling experience........

Printers in a VM use the drivers for the OS you connect the printer on, so in this case XP, as you run Xp in your VM. The file Windows is looking for could be found in the installer file for your printer. Search for the drivers for your printer and install it using it's installer, not the Windows Add Hardware Wizard.

Good job Sasquatch!

Did that and it all came up just fine. Printed out a test page and it looks good.

So I learned something else today about VM. Incidentally, I wasn't trying to install as new hardware originally (although that didn't work out either). When XP boots up and sees hardware that it doesn't know about, it automatically tells you about it and that was its downfall in this case as it was looking for that PPD file.

So with VM, forget plug n play. Install the device from scratch and it will work. Hopefully. Now on to the next challenge. USB device that provides DT for my phone. It would be good to get phone service working again.

Thanks again for the suggestion.
