Floppy Controller on Win98SE Guest
Floppy Controller on Win98SE Guest
I created a Win98SE guest about three years ago, mostly just to see if I could do it, but I found reason to tinker with it from time to time. Today was the first day I had run it in a long time, after who knows how many updates to VirtualBox have gone by. Anyway, As soon as I log in to the guest, it want to install a floppy disk controller. But as soon as it starts it just freezes. I let it sit for about an hour, but there was no change. Just a constant 11-13 per cent CPU usage from VB. I removed the floppy controller and then it logged in just fine. It idles using no more than 2 percent CPU. As soon as I add a controller in again, it goes back to being frozen. Don't even need to add a floppy drive to duplicate the issue. It just says new hardware is detected, and then gets stuck with the image seen in the attachment.
Oddly enough when I run it in safe mode, it sees a floppy drive, but strangely enough it only saw one even when two were attached, and it saw two when none were attached (and even with no floppy controller "installed").
Either way, safe mode had no trouble with the controller, but normal operation wants to install a new controller and freezes while doing so. Not sure what's happening here as I at times have used a handful of floppy images with this guest OS and would like to continue to do so.

Re: Floppy Controller on Win98SE Guest
I'm afraid this information is not very useful without knowing which VirtualBox version it relates to. And I take it the host is Win7, judging from the caption bars.
Please post a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

My mistake. Yes, it's Windows 7, Professional 64-bit SP1, using VirtualBox 4.3.30 r101610. I had to run it again to get a useful log, as I had last run it with the floppy controller removed, but I attached the log after running it for a couple minutes after adding a floppy controller again.
