Splitting VDI files

I'm in need of a way to split my VDI into DVD sized chunks so I can back them up and then rejoin them later when needed. Is there a good way to do this w/o compromising the integrity of the VM? Its about 40GB, so it's rather large.

The VDI in mind was a converted from a raw disk image from an existing Red Hat installation.

For such things its better to buy a external usb hard drive.
