USB passthru?

I'm trying to use a USB device in my VM that isn't supported by Linux (Motorola Q smartphone). Linux sees the device but can't install a driver, windows XP installs the driver but loses the conection. I do have the remote option set to any, saying yes doesn't seem to change. Does the same with USB 2.0 enabled or disabled. I'm new to the VM thing, so I'm not too sure where to go from here. I'd like to eventually get rid of XP on my desktop, and do this with my laptop, but I still need support for my phone and my daibetic software. Is this something I may run into with a serial device as well?
