BSOD 0x0000009c with Broadwell i5-5675c

Hi everyone,

anyone else with problems with VB and Broadwell?

with my new processor Intel i5-5675c I always get a BSOD 0x0000009c Machine_Ceck_Exception after starting a Linux Live CD in my VM. Usually the BSOD appears after 2min after the Live CD is started.

This is not a Hardware bug. The things that I tested:

plugged out all un-necassary HW (drives, RAM)
tested with changed HW: tried with a different MB (Asrock Z97 Killer), tried with another new Intel i5-5675c --> system with MB Asrock H97, i5-5675c & GTX 750TI is rock solid and passes 12h of Prime torture test without errors
tested with changed SW: reinstalled Windows host, tried VirtualBox 4.3
tested with changed UEFI / BIOS settings: multiple cores deactivated, energy saving Intel Speed Step deactivated, raise of voltage...

Always the same result (reproduce):

Fresh Linux VM is created
Live CD ISO is specified
Linux VM boots from Live CD
A few click selecting the language and clicking "Try Ubuntu without installing"
BSOD 0x0000009c Machine_Ceck_Exception after 2min

Since this never happened before with my old processor, I have a strong feeling that this is somehow related. It's a new processor architecture and currently the only available Broadwell CPU for sockel 1150 with 14nm.

I have the same issue. My processor is i7-5775c and MB is AsRock H97 Performance.

A machine check exception indicates a hardware problem. You need to talk to your CPU/motherboard vendor, since they are the ones who can fix it. It's something that has perhaps higher likelihood of happening when running VirtualBox, but occurs even on systems with no VirtualBox in sight.

I might also suggest that you update your bios. I have seen issues with the newer MBs and their chipsets x99 and the fix was to update the bios.

Yes, good advice. It seems that a CPU microcode update fixes this, and an updated BIOS is how it would be distributed. Obviously if and when such an update might be available is not something Oracle has a lot to say about.

I set the nosmap kernel option, and Linux guest didn't caused BSOD for one day. This seems that it is a good work around solution, at least. I didn't turn off any one of SpeedStep, Turbo Boost, C-State, VT-x at BIOS.
