I tried to upgrade a VM from Win 7 to Win 10 and it came up with the message it is not possible to install Windows 10 on this machine as it lacks compareexchange128 instruction.
What does this mean?
I have a few other machines successfully running Win 10 but I can't remember whether I got this message when I first installed Win 10 on any of them.
I did get a message saying that the VM was not able to run Win10 when I checked with MS checking program.
I run 4.3.30 on a Windows 7 Host.

Re: compareexchange128 not present
It probably means that you weren't using the VBox Windows 10 template, and/or not selecting the correct 32bit vs 64bit template.MacNala wrote: What does this mean?

Re: compareexchange128 not present
Now you have me completely confused. What is a "Windows 10 template"?
Where can I find out more about this in, for example, the documentation?
My documentation gives only "template" associated with VNIC templates for VLANs on Solaris 11 hosts which is obviously not what you meant.
The VM was originally setup as a 64 bit Win7 and installed and updated to the latest patch status.
I then used the setup application from the disc created from the get windows 10 app. Using the option to download to a DVD.

Re: compareexchange128 not present
When you start a new guest, the first screen in the new guest wizard has a dropdown with the manufacturer and type of the OS you're trying to install. This is the "template" Mpack is discussing. You can change the "template" of an existing guest by going to the guest's Settings, General tab. The same dropdowns exist there. Pick the Windows 10 template for the correct 32/64 bit from the dropdown.

Re: compareexchange128 not present
Thanks for the reply.
I was not aware of the ability to change the "Template" of an existing VM. That will come in handy and I will retry the upgrade.

I don't know why you were confused. ISTM we've had this conversation before, except regarding Windows 8.1.

I am concerned about your memory mpack.
I think you must be confusing me with someone else.
Perhaps it is my memory that is at fault could you identify the posting in which we discussed compareexchange128 before?

Re: compareexchange128 not present
I didn't say we had discussed compareexchange128 before, I said we had discussed the meaning and role of templates before. But, if you don't remember it then perhaps I was mistaken.

Re: compareexchange128 not present
I have searched all the posts using the keyword templates but have not found anything.
No matter, you responded and answered my question so thanks.

An update and an apology.
I have found the thread in which you were very patient with me and explained about the Selection Icon.
So I apologise for forgetting about that.
It wasn't until I reviewed all my posts and viewed the threads that I saw it.
The additional information you have provided identifies the icon as the template.
