Windows XP SP2 crashes

Post by alphis »

Hello all. VirtualBox is a great VM app and I intend to switch my main box to linux as soon as I can safely emulate windows for the few things I still need it to do.

I run windows xp sp2 in virtualbox, bridged network etc. Works fine, I can ping posts on my LAN and they can ping back. However, after a while (usually I leave the windows virtual downloading stuff) I come back to my machine and see that my windows machine has blue screened on me!

This happens ALL the time! What is interesting to note is that when this happens, I notice that lsmod no longer has vboxdrv OR tun (used for the tunnel for the bridge). They were certainly there before I loaded virtualbox but after running windows for a while it blue screens and those modules are always missing at this point.

Any ideas as to why windows keeps crashing? Seems that the vboxdrv always dies for some reason and the virutal environment dies resulting in that blue screen. Why would this happen?

Thanks!

Windows XP SP2 crashes

Post by Ted-UK »

Hi Alphis,

The only time I have had problems with a VM running in VBox (both Linux & Windows guests) is if I've left my computer unattended for a while and my xscreensaver has started.

When I come back, my Linux host is still OK, but my guest VM is often "frozen" or "locked up" and I have to use the VBox menu at the top of the window to Close the VM.

Try keeping it company (no screensaver starting up) and see if that helps.

Best wishes,
Ted
