Update to GuestAdditions 4.3.30 causes blank display

I had a perfectly functioning Windows 7 Pro x64 VM. A few weeks ago I upgraded to VB 4.3.30. Today when I started the VM it prompted to upgrade the Guest Additions to 4.3.30. I merrily started the update. When the update was done, I dutifully rebooted the VM and when it got to the Windows boot screen the moving square forms and then the display goes blank.

Prior to the update, the VM was running Guest Additions 4.3.12. Since I can't see the display, I reset the VM and went to Safe Mode which had a functioning display. I uninstalled Guest Additions, rebooted and the display works. So it looks like something in the install of the Guest Additions is causing the problem.

Additional info: The first time I tried to install guest additions I selected the box for 3D support but the install said I needed to install from Safe Mode to do that. So after acknowledging the message I let the installer continue without installing 3D. But a strange thing happened. The display window resized to about 1/4 the normal size but the screen displayed in the window was cut off. The VM was not responding so I reset it. I've since uninstalled and reinstalled Guest Additions, but still can't get the display to work with Guest Additions installed.

I also tried this: In Safe Mode, I uninstalled the Display driver. When I reboot, the system boots and the display is visible. But when I now reboot the VM again, the display goes blank.

How can I fix this? Thanks for any help you can provide.
