can't read from the source file or disk

Hi,
My virtual machine was running slow and having some 100% disk usage (quite a lot actually).
So I decided to buy myself a 500gb SDD drive where I could move my virtual machine.
The problem is, every time I try to copy the .vdi I get an error stating: can't read from the source file or disk.
The SDD is formatted as NTFS and the .vdi file is 218GB large.
I thought it might be an issue with the file size, so I tried to copy a similar .vdi file that I have for another virtual machine, it copied fine (I even let it copy it all and then ran it from my SDD and it worked). This .vdi file was 214GB so I find it hard to believe that it is an issue with file size.
Also, I can rename the offending .vdi so it isn't locked and it isn't currupt because I can launch the virtual box instance using that disk.
Just for clarification, I have removed the virtual machine from the manager and closed it down before I try to copy.
I even restarted my machine and it still didn't help.
I ran chkdsk on both drives and both were fine.
Does anyone know why this might be happening?
