So I first received a notification to update Virtualbox, which was previously running just fine. Upon trying to install the update (5.0.4) I got an Install Failed error. After that, my previously installed version no longer worked. I did some Googling and found others who had similar issues and were able to resolve it by moving the old virtual machine files out of the install path, and then installing. I've even tried removing every file associated with Virtualbox and then proceeded to try to install various older versions, thinking that perhaps there was something in 5.0.4 that didn't agree with my OS. No luck, I still get the same error. I've attached the install log, in case anyone can glean something from it. Any tips would be most appreciated.

Same problem for me. VirtualBox is now unusable on my Mac.
Can't install the update, can't open what is now a damaged VB installation.

If uninstalling VirtualBox using the VirtualBox_Uninstall.tool then reinstalling doesn't help, things you can try…
1. Repair disk permissions using Disk Utility.
2. Check for /.mach_kernel and delete it if it exists. It's invisible so you will have to change the finder to show hidden files…
To show hidden files, in the Terminal enter each line separately.
To hide them again, same thing.
Beyond that, I have no idea. I've never run into the error.

loukingjr, you are a life saver. That did the trick. Deleting the mach_kernel file appears to be what fixed it. i don't know what was happening, but after deleting that file I was successfully able to install the latest version of VirtualBox. Thank you very much, i really appreciate it

Re: Virtualbox 5.0.4 on Mac OS X 10.10.5 Install Failed
You're welcome. The mach_kernel file is left over from OSX before 10.10. Why it's deleted for some when updating to 10.10 and not others I don't know. Good to hear it's fixed.
