I'm setting up a Windows 7 guest on Mac OS X. I'm trying to use a host only adapter since some software that I'm using requires it.

When I load windows 7 in the VM, I get "unidentified network." And I cannot visit any webpages.

There appears to be a adapter on the Mac side with IP 192.168.56.1. The windows guest seems to get an IP of 192.168.56.100.

I'm using the Intel desktop adapter for the guest.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

"Host only" means that only the host (and other VMs on the same network) is accessible from the VM. Specifically not accessible is the wider Internet.

If you want to access the internet then you need to be on a physical network, not a fully virtual one. That means that you need to be using NAT or bridged. Anything that requires host only (and I have to say that I don't know what would) should also work with bridged. But, NAT is a lot easier.

You don't need to cut yourself off from the Internet just because "some software" needs a host only connection. Set up an additional virtual NIC in the guest for the host only adapter and leave the first one set to NAT. The software should be smart enough to use the one it needs.
