When I try to install Windows 10 I receive an error about a compatibility issue with my graphics adapter: The display manufacturer hasn't made your display adapter compatible with Windows 10. Check with the manufacturer for support.

Is there such a thing as support from the manufacturer?

If you are updating an existing Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 guest you need to uninstall the guest additions before you try and update.

I have a MacOS and I cannot find a utility for the removal anywhere on the computer. I also searched the Internet and I could not find a way to remove the guest additions.

Many references point to an /opt location but there isn't such a directory on my computer.

Can you provide any additional information?

Well you didn't say you were updating an existing Windows Guest but if you are, just open the Control Panel in your Windows guest, Add/Remove Programs and look for the Oracle guest additions and remove them.

I did removed them, rebooted and the same error is stopping the installation. Oy!

Did you change the template to Windows 10? If not, you have to.

Not that I know of personally but you can always search the forum for others that had the same problem.

Really? I thought I was the only one having this problem.

I downloaded the iso, burned it on a dvd and now I am in the middle of installing windows 10. PHEW!

I'm having the same problem - being advised of vbox graphics adapter incompatibility - I'm also trying to upgrade from Windows 8.1 to 10 (Windows Guest and Mac host) using the latest version of vbox. Has this been resolved using the suggested approach? Reading other posts suggests this isn't always successful. Is this kind of error picked up in future maintenance releases of vbox? If so I'll wait in order to save time trying to fix it.

Do you have anything to indicate that it is a VirtualBox problem rather than a Microsoft upgrade problem? I have seen very similar problems listed in the Windows 10 forums for upgrades on physical machines.

After looking at a lot of differing advice on various forums I managed to successfully upgrade using the latest version of vbox and GA but only after a few attempts. In the end I uninstalled GA, switched off, restarted, uninstalled the AV software, switched off, restarted and attempted an uninstall of the graphics adapter as it was showing an error which couldn't be corrected - although this wasn't successful, the attempt appeared to change the performance of the guest. Then I downloaded and ran the media creation tool but updated the machine rather than creating an ISO image. The install appeared to falter and I had a black screen. After waiting 15 minutes with no change I decided to risk powering off the guest but when I switched it back on the install recovered and completed - I'm not sure if I should have been more patient. I reinstalled GA and things seem to be fine. Now I just need to get the multimedia audio controller working so I can have sound. Thanks for all the posts on this subject. I really am an amateur at IT but I'm learning fast.
