VBoxVMService and disconnected difference disks

Post by BigRic »

Good evening. Installed VBoxVMService onto a 2012 server today and migrated an old vmware workstation XP guest. All went well until I tried to stop the service in order to load the local GUI in VirtualBox Manager. With it running, I kept getting an error that the files were locked or missing and had to be checked (VB5 and service from July 2015). The error seems to indicate that the link between either the snapshot I took when done and/or the differencing disks. Here's the error when I try to start it up:

Failed to open a session for the virtual machine LegacyXP.

Parent UUID {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} of the medium 'C:\Users\Server\VirtualBox VMs\LegacyXP\Snapshots\{01ebe669-6cf5-4abf-a6c7-bb9eb827c720}.vhd' does not match UUID {2e884199-34ae-44c4-9ad9-f8a568c58c61} of its parent medium stored in the media registry ('C:\Users\Server\.VirtualBox\VirtualBox.xml').

Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: MediumWrap
Interface: IMedium {4afe423b-43e0-e9d0-82e8-ceb307940dda}

I saw some other posts suggesting that I release and then remove the two vdisks, then re-attach them to the VM. I did that but without success. I now have a bunch of files in the snapshot folder, but the links to the proper disks seem to be messed up. Any thoughts?

Was able to fix it, but not sure why it happened. The UUID of all 0's was obviously wrong. I found the parent ID using the command line tools and relinked the snapshot that would not load by changing the parent ID. Cloning it now to be safe, but really don't know why it crapped out.
