VB 5.0.4 : no USB redirect on host Win 7-64

Hallo,
I'm stuck with an issue where USB redirection from host to guest is completely failing with my setup. Host is running Windows 7 64bit, RAM: 8GB, CPU: AMD A4-4000. I tried different USB devices on 1.1 and 2.0 ports and I tested with 3 guest systems: Win7-32, WinXP-32, Ubuntu 12.04-64. Current guest additions are installed in all VMs and extension pack is also installed on host.
When on my host looking into device manager of windows I can see the particular USB device appearing when plugged in. Now when trying to switch this device to my VM (no matter if using GUI or CLI), in device manager this USB device is replaced with a device "VirtualBox USB". Although this is still expected behavior, nothing ever happens on side of the guest(s).
Now with release 5.0.4 of VirtualBox I noticed some "!!Assertion Failed!!" messages in VBoxSVC.log referencing to Codemodule "HostUSBDeviceImpl.cpp". Maybe something's going utterly wrong on my host ?
Anything else I can do myself ?
Thanks in advance.
D.J.

Post a VM log file. With the VM fully shut down, right click it in GUI. Select "Show Log" and save "VBox.log" (ONLY) to a zip file. Attach the zip here.

What is the device, and what version of USB does it require?
On a separate note, I see that you allocated 2048MB RAM to your guest. This is overkill for an XP guest, and also not wise since the log also shows your host having only 2690MB free.

As said, I tried 3 different devices. Here is output of
vboxmanage list usbhost:

Mouse and keyboard may be obvious...
SanDisk Cruzer Crossfire is a 4GB USB 2.0 compliant massstorage usb key
Canon CanoScan is a flatbed scanner and really just USB 1.1 capable
REINER SCT cyberJack e-com plus is a smartcard reader with keypad, it's USB 2.0 compliant but working fine on USB 1.1 ports
On a separate note, I see that you allocated 2048MB RAM to your guest. This is overkill for an XP guest, ...
Ohh...

now that you mention it...
Well that's due to history. This is a rather "old" VM which I migrated from VMware last summer. And until recently I had to run VisualStudio 2005 within which needs a little bit of RAM. But now it's just my multi purpose testing machine.
..., and also not wise since the log also shows your host having only 2690MB free.
I'm fine with that so far, as it's not my usual working setup on this machine having 3 VMs running at the same time. In fact, resourcemonitor of windows shows just 1.5GB RAM available. But be assured, I'm always keeping an eye on this.
