Optical drive not recognized.

Hello,

I understand this topic has been broached in another post, however it was related to the MacBook Air.

I am running vituralbox version 5.0.2 r102096 on my mid-2010 MacBook Pro OS X Yosemite. The problem I am having is that viturabox does not recognize my optical drive. The guest machine I have installed is Windows XP Professional.

Do you think you could post a larger screen shot? I doubt anyone can see the ones you posted well enough to be useful.

Yes, they're better. The "Host Drive MA…" is your optical drive.

In the first screen shot you have added a second CD controller with the guest additions attached.
In the second screen shot you have added a third CD controller.

You should delete the two extra controllers and just use the one currently marked "Empty".

Yes. You don't really need the SCSI Controller for an XP guest.

With the guest shutdown. You need to insert the install CD into the drive and select it by clicking on the CD icon to the far right in the storage settings where it said "Empty". You may have to check "Passthrough".

If you used an .iso to install XP you need to attach it to the same place. Then start XP.

Did you try and highlight "Host Drive…"? i'm flying blind somewhat since I no longer own any Macs with a built-in optical drive.

What is WinLite? That is not a retail XP install disk.

Nevermind. I looked it up. We don't help with "hacked" versions of an OS.

The install CD is not a hacked version of XP. It was given to me from a friend who bought numerous licensed copies.

I certainly believe someone else gave you copy. I don't understand and it doessn't matter why he would violate Microsoft's EULA by giving away even licensed copies, the part I don't get is why he would name the copies after a known hack. Regardless, I haven't used a Mac with an optical drive for almost three years so I'm probably missing a step. Perhaps another user can help.

nLite is a slipstreaming tool, I'm not at all sure what WinLite is.

Also, it is not illegal to give away XP licenses, provided the originator doesn't continue using it as well.

However, there are other reasons why we can't support anything except regular XP setup CDs here. Quite apart from the legal issues, there is the quite practical matter that we have no idea what's on the disk.

That said, AFAIK it's a well known problem that a USB optical drive on the host is not seen as a optical drive by VirtualBox, and hence can't be selected from the dialog. This is probably a limitation of USB, i.e. that it looks like generic mass storage. You are effectively restricted to using ISO images, which you can still make using the CD drive.

Okay, I'm confused. For one thing I just remembered my Linux laptop has a built in CD/DVD drive. I guess you can tell I don't use it much.

However, I can select it in the storage drop down menu, enable passthrough, and once I start the guest, I can play CDs, DVD movies etc.

WinLite along with MicroXP were pared down versions of XP. Usually showed up on torrent sites.
