what does changing the OS type to "Windows 10 (xx bit)" does

Ok,

I am running VirtualBox on Linux Ubuntu 14.04. I am been toying up with Windows 10 preview for a while, with pretty good success overall. I Initially started with VirtualBox 4.3.20 and did not have the option for Windows 10 guest, so I opted for Windows 8.1 at the time. I kept upgrading Windows 10 and VirtualBox since then. I had unexplained crashes with VirtualBox 4.3.30. So I just updated to VirtualBox 5.0.2. So far so good. Mega Kudos to the dev team btw!

I noticed that now there is an option for a windows 10 guest. So if I change it, what will that do exactly?
- Is that just a collection of preset for a new VM (like Chipset, USB, Sound chipset ...etc...), and in my case it will do nothing unless I create a fresh new VM?
- Is there more to it and the virtualisation really handles this differently?

If you want to be sure that a VM is compatible with a given guest, choose the correct template. However it is true that, AFAIK, Win10's requirements are similar to those of Win8.1. You should still make the change.

It is particularly important to change this setting if upgrading a guest from Win8.0, or Win7.
