I thought about this a little more and removing the kext seems to be the correct method to get the Mac to release the adapter but, do we know this particular adapter is compatible with Linux? Linux is fairly flexible when it comes to hardware but not everything will work. I would think one needs to know if the adapter will work natively on Linux and what is needed to get it to run on a Linux host if it can.
I briefly looked on the Edimax site and a couple of their adapters will work on Linux but many don't list Linux compatibility. Would need to know which model is being used.
