getting wireless on linux guest.

Hi,
So I have bought a wireless adapter for my virtualbox, my computer has wireless on it but I was told I needed an adapter also. I am having trouble of getting my mac os x 10.10 to let go of the adapter so I can have wireless inside vbox. When I go to device, settings, usb, and click the Edimax usb it gives me a error that someone else is using it. Which seems to be the main machine ie. mac. I read on line that if I deleted the kext for the usb adapter the mac would let it go and it did but then the usb adapter would not work because it had no kext.
So this put me back at square one, with a mac that has wifi and a usb adapter for the vbox to be able to have wifi but doesn't. The only thing that comes up when i put in ifconfig is eth0, and iwconfig out puts no wireless found. How do I either get the mac to let go of the usb adapter or configure it in some way so that virtualbox has wireless???

It's always better to allow the host to do the wireless networking instead of passing through any network device to the guest.

how do I allow that? it just shows up as eth0 not wireless.

Any host connection wired or wireless will show as wired in the guest. Perhaps if you explain exactly what you are wanting to achieve it would be easier to explain what it is you need to do.

I am taking an online class on udemy, and the teacher lesson is on aircrack-ng. So it starts with taking the wireless connection down by ifconfig wl2s0 down (wl2s0 is his wireless) so for me I don't have one all I have is eth0. The next command was iwconfig mode monitor then ifconfig wl2s0 up. So when I try to do iwconfig mode monitor I get an error because my system has no wireless extensions. It just seems that I am unable to configure mine to show a wireless extension. And I really don't see it being that hard I have followed everything in the class and look for about a week online now, to get iwconfig to produce something other than no wireless extensions. I can cont. on with the aircrack-ng and airodump-ng running on eth0.
If I try and just skip through the errors and cont on to the airodump-ng it doesn't work because of that lack of wireless extensions. I don't know if this makes more sense of what is trying to be done??

OK then you just need to release the device from the host. Most Mac users do this in finder. Then add the device to the guest. You may need to install linux-firmware to be able to actually use the device.
The host must have the VBox ExtPack installed to be able to use USB

Perry is correct. You have to release the adapter from your Mac. You may need to create a USB filter for the device.

If the device shows up in the Finder sidebar, you only need to eject it to release it from your Mac. As I mentioned, you may need to create a USB filter and plug the adapter in after the guest is started.

So the USB adapter shows up as a old looking computer, but there is no eject button and I cannot throw it away. It tells me it's being used and cannot be trashed. But if load up the Linux and have the filter set up when I plug in the adapter it crashes my real computer. Tried it 3 times to many. Idk any other ideas??

Didn't you say you removed a kext file earlier? I don't know that much about a Mac but I would think you should put it back like it was and then the eject might show up.

Yes I did delete the kext. But it made it far worse. The vbox was able to pick it up cause the Mac did drop it, but then it wouldn't do anything. If I clicked on open wireless utilities it did nothing. So I reinstalled the kext and was able to connect to internet but not to vbox. Catch 22

That is what I meant. Put it back. Anyway I have no idea what to tell you to do to fix your Mac. Maybe Lou can tell you.

I wish I could. I've never used an external wi-fi device so I have no idea what to do with them.
