Remote login to VM machine... security?

Post by stargazer »

OK... this might be a dumb question and I am confusing myself a bit here.....but,

I am having ongoing issues with my Skype number and the support guy wants to remotely login to my PC to view settings etc. I really don't like the idea of this.... I am running Windows 7 and was wondering if I created a Windows 7 VM and installed Skype onto the VM and let the support guy log in to the VM would he be able to have any access to my host PC???

Thanks

He should not have access to the host PC if the Skype client is in the guest. You'll have the extra setup to get the webcam to feed into the guest if you do video calls, and the guest install will be a fresh install that may not have any problems in it. So your host Skype may not be fixed.

Another possibility, change the login password temporarily to something easy for the guy to use but which you'd switch back to your secure password when you're done. So if he tries to log back in one day he'll fail. Also, most of these support remote login systems require you to manually accept the remote login and/or enter a session number to allow the remote support to see your screen. Ask him how his system works. If he says you need to enter the number or click an Allow button or some such, then he won't be able to get in until you do so, and you'll probably be safe.
