Minibar disappears and window problem after 5.0.2 upgrade

I recently upgraded to VirtualBox 5.0.2 and the related extension pack / guest additions. After the upgrade I have these problems
1) when I start a Ubuntu 14.04 guest, while the virtual machine is starting up the screen flickers a lot. This happens on both of my monitors even though the guest is only using one monitor.
2) While the guest is starting I can see the minibar between flickers but once the guest has fully started the minibar is not visible and hovering the mouse near the top of the screen does not make it appear.
3) I cannot get any window from the host to appear over the guest. This use to be no problem. Even the Windows 8.1 start screen will not show.
* After upgrading to 5.0.2 I experienced the above problems + I could not see the mouse cursor in the guest even though it was working as evidenced by right clicking on the desktop and seeing the menu. After a few guest and host restarts explorer.exe crashed and when the machine restarted it was unusably slow. I'm not saying the upgrade and the crash are related. However, I rebuilt the machine today and it is a fresh Windows 8.0 (updates on their way) with nothing else installed and experiencing the above 3 issues.
Anyone have an idea what is happening?
Thanks
