VBox won't start VMs under Windows 10 b10240

Post by tobyj »

Hi all,
Whenever I try to start a virtual machine under Windows 10, I get the following error message:

Code: Select all

RTR3InitEx failed with rc=-1912
where: supR3HardenedMainInitRuntime
what: 4
VERR_VM_DRIVER_VERSION_MISMATCH (-1912) - The installed support driver doesn't match the version of the user.
I am using the latest test build of VirtualBox (5.0.3-102322 as of writing) on hardware which is known to support VirtualBox (worked on 8.1). I didn't do the in-place upgrade - instead, I reformatted and installed Windows 10 from a USB drive.
How can I fix the problem? It might be worth mentioning a previous install of VirtualBox failed and the installer had to be killed through Task Manager.]

Thanks,
Toby

Doing a complete reinstall of VirtualBox fixed the problem (including manually removing the .VirtualBox folder).
Weird, as this didn't work before.

Seeing the same on release version of VirtualBox 5.0.4, although I upgraded.
Windows 10 is the actual host, not 8 (no option).

These are the steps I used to fix this issue on my system - Window 10 Home build 10240:
  1. Uninstall VirtualBox (through "Programs and Features").
  2. Make sure "VirtualBox NDIS6 Bridged Networking Driver" is uninstalled from network devices: Steps
    • GOTO: Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change adapter settings
    • RIght-click your network device (mine was Dell Wireless 1703) and select "Properties".
    • Select the "VirtualBox NDIS6 Bridged Networking Driver" and click "Uninstall".
  3. (Optional) Restart your system.
  4. Install VirtualBox (I installed build 5.0.4r102546)
  5. When prompted, make sure "Bridged Networking Driver" is set to NOT INSTALL!
  6. Done. Enjoy VirtualBox.
Hope this helps.
