Can't upgrade Win7 guest to Win 8.1

I have a Macbook Pro with a 1TB drive, partitioned into 800G for Mac OS X and 200G for Windows 8.1/Bootcamp. I also have a Windows 7 guest on my VirtualBox app on OS X. I want to retire the Bootcamp partition and upgrade the Windows 7 guest to Windows 8.1 (without getting distracted by questions like "Why?"). So I started by booting into Windows 8.1 and created a fresh Windows 8.1 install DVD. Then I rebooted into OS X, launched my Win7 VirtualBox guest, mounted the DVD and rebooted the guest. The Win8.1 logo showed up, then the guest stopped, requiring me to either go into Debug mode or just power down. Not being VB Debug skilled, I just powered down. The PNG snapshot and the log file (218KB) are available on demand. My starting questions are:
1. Is what I am trying to do impossible for some reason?
2. Is there a better way (like using USB instead of DVD)?
3. Can I just clone the entire Win8.1 partition and make a guest OS from that, instead of upgrading the Win7 guest?
4. Should I be asking different questions, and if so, what?
