MDT 2013 - Use Windows 8.1 for Windows VMs?

Post by TDHCA-Eddie »

Virtualbox 4.x has worked flawlessly with Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT 2012) for the purposes of creating a reference build for deployment of Windows 7. I am working on upgrading our MDT 2012 server to MDT 2013 so we can support Windows 8.1 deployments (we're 99% Windows 7 except for a few pesky tablets). In my testing (and from consulting the forums) I need to set a Windows 7 guest to actually be Windows 8.1 so that WinPE 5 will start in a Windows guest (WinPE 5 = Windows 8.1 as far as drivers for networking and storage go). Using the settings for Windows 8.1 I can successfully deploy a Windows 7 guest and as far as I can tell there are no issues when comparing a VM deployed with MDT 2012 with Windows 7 guest settings. Can others working in an environment with MDT 2013 confirm they are just leaving their Windows 7 guests with Windows 8.1 settings? Are there any issues I need to know about or settings that may need to be tweaked that might not be apparent at first glance since once deployed everything appears to be in good working order?

Environment:
- Windows 7 SP1 x64 Host
- Windows 7 SP1 x64 Guest
- Virtualbox 4.3.30
