I am running virtualbox 5 on 64-bit Windows 7 Pro, and I have 64-bit Windows 8.1 installed as a machine in vbox. When trying to update to Windows 10 in the vbox machine, it refuses saying that there is a compatibility issue because of "VirtualBox Graphics Adapter for Windows 8".

Is there a thread here explaing how to get around it? Thanks.

Yes, there's a whole forum seemingly dedicated to answering that question. I.e. this forum.

Apparantly the solution is to uninstall the GAs and reboot the guest before upgrading.

what is a GA? Guest Additions? Afterwards reinstall?

That is correct.

I used Windows to uninstall GA, afterwards updated Windows and shutdown. Once restarting, the exact same problem persists. Same error message. Nothing changed.

Power off the VM, change the OS Type setting in the VM config to Windows 10, then try again.

Still no change in error message. Meanwhile, I am not running virtualbox 5.02. Thanks.

Uninstall Guest Additions
Download Windows 10 media from www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
Upgrade your Guest from either USB or ISO (whichever you chose)
Reinstall Guest Additions
Upgrade VBox to 5.0.2
