Windows 7 64bit (host and guest) - Can't use bridged mode.

Post by mjmiff »

I am hoping someone else has experienced this issue as I am at a complete loss.

I have VB installed on a Windows 7 host running a Windows 7 guest. In NAT mode everything works fine (except for VPN connections, which is why I need bridged mode).

When I switch to bridged mode everything looks fine in the settings. In the guest I receive an IP from the DHCP server which is verified by looking at my router and seeing my guest PC name.

Under Local Area Network Status I get IPv4 Connectivity: No Internet Access - same for IPv6..... I have even tried disabling 6....

Bytes out will show numbers but bytes in will now, always says 0. I can't ping anything.

I have tried re-installing, booting with out startup services and resetting NICs nothing seems to work except NAT mode.

Any help will be appreciated!

If you are using VirtualBox 5, try switching to NDIS5 driver.
User Manual wrote: The user is able to choose between NDIS5 and NDIS6 host network filters drivers during the installation. This is realized via a command line parameter NETWORKTYPE. The NDIS6 driver is default for Windows Vista and later. For older Windows versions, the installer will automatically select the NDIS5 driver and this cannot be changed. For Windows Vista and later the user can force to install the (legacy) NDIS5 host network filter driver using NETWORKTYPE=NDIS5. For example, to install the NDIS5 driver on Windows 7, do

VirtualBox.exe -msiparams NETWORKTYPE=NDIS5
If this not solve your issue, please read Minimum information needed for assistance and provide zipped attachment of the VM log file and the guest settings.

I tried that and no luck. Is this what you mean by the log? Sorry I am new to troubleshooting VB...

Yes this is what I mean, except that one is not complete. Also, guest settings are still required.

Yeah that is a huge fail on my part, my bad. Hope I did this right... Third time is a charm?

I noticed this in the guest_settings - Reported speed: 0 Mbps - not sure if that matters, seems weird.. Wish I could understand the startup log...

I only see that your guest additions are out of date (4.3.30 for a VBox 5.0 install) but that wouldn't be the issue.
Seems to me like the issue is in the guest, not with VirtualBox.
Can you provide the output of the following commands in a command prompt in the guest while in Bridged mode please:

Code: Select all

ipconfig /all
route print
ping 8.8.8.8
nslookup 8.8.8.8

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection* 12:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Citrix Virtual Adapter
Have you tried without any Citrix/VMware/VPN software installed or their network filters disabled? these are known to cause conflict when it comes to Bridged mode.
A good way to know if that could be the case is to check the list of installed filters in the Adapter properties.

Oh man, I was hoping something would jump out and be the issue haha.. Very odd one, that is for sure. I'll try it without the filters or maybe just uninstall the VPNs for now and report.

Thanks for all your help!

In case anyone finds this that has the same issue, the only way I was able to fix it was to reinstall the guest OS. Bridge mode now works just fine.
