ThirdParty Software gives OpenGl driver error

Post by ilcaa »

I have Win 7 64 bit guest VBOX running on Win 7 64bit Host. I downloaded a third party software that displays 3-d graphics and uses OpenGl in the software.

The software cant run because of a OpenGl driver error. Within VBOX I enabled 3D acceleration but still get the error. The vendor suggested I update my Intel Graphics driver but the Win 7 64 it guest VMachine rejects the driver because I dont meet the requirements, (the Win7 VM is using "VirtualBox Graphics Adaptor").

Can I switch the graphics driver to use the Host machines graphics driver? If not what can I do to make OpenGL driver issue go away? Thanks for the help.

Please read Minimum information needed for assistance and provide zipped attachment of the VM log file and the guest settings.

Also, can you confirm where you are trying to run the software: in the host or in the guest?

Log File has been attached. The software that gives the error is installed on the guest Vmachine, that is why i cannot update the driver (the VMachine uses "VirtualBox Graphics Adaptor"). Guest Additions has been installed. Guest has 25GB of dynamic HD space uses currently 12GB.

both machines are Win 7 64 Bit, Host has 8GB of RAM. Guest has 3.0 GB of allocated RAM. The guest vMachine works perfectly fine, no issues what so ever. The only issues is this 3rd party SW that I installed on the guest uses OpenGL and when I start the SW it gives OpenGL driver error. 3d acceleration has been checked within VMachine settings.

Thank you for the info, everything seems to be fine from a VirtualBox point of view.

No you can't. VirtualBox provides a virtual graphic card which is simply not Intel. No Intel driver will ever work on it.

I'm afraid you will have to keep asking the company supporting that 3rd party software. Only them can tell you what is missing exactly. Maybe if you were to give the name here, someone would know a way.

thanks, I did contact the vendor and he says he never had this issue, He suggested i download the latest graphics driver (again... the SW is installed on the guest VM so i cant install the driver. The host machine has the driver updated) that why i reached out to the forum...

i am enclosing a screenshot of the error box. The software is Quirkos. http://www.quirkos.com/index.html

thanks again for the help

You need to make sure you have installed the guest additions with the 3D driver, whch is not selected by default. you also need to make sure you install the WDDM one, not the one requiring safe mode.
The wording during install of the guest additions is not ideal so make sure to read correctly. If you are not sure anymore, simply install them again, it will overwrite what you have now.

If the problem still occurs with the WDDM driver installed, then you need to make it clear to the vendor that the software is running in a VirtualBox VM, which is fully up to date. They'll need to adapt the code for it, if they want to.
The error is clear about the fact it cannot detect the 3D components. They need to check it out.
