Guest works for a period, then stops logging

Post by jperry535 »

Running Widows 10 and VBox 5.0.2, both up-to-date. I am new to VBox. Have figured out how to start a guest, but after several minutes and several splash screens Mint Cinnamon and other guests stop writing to the log, leaving a black screen (in MC) or screen comes to a slow-motion stop (in Zoric).

I don't see any obvious error.

Need help with determining what is going on. Faulty setting? Bug in W10 or VB 5.0.2?

Log runs for a few minutes, logging pause (not machine pause), then shut-down after looking a log.

Please keep Windows 10 host discussions in the dedicated topic.
We will allow topics to be opened about it after offcial support has been announced by Oracle.

I will still comment on the log since I can directly see your problem:
VirtualBox VM 5.0.2 r102096 win.amd64 (Aug 13 2015 17:23:32) release log
00:01:31.587559 VMMDev: Guest Additions information report: Version 4.3.10 r93012 '4.3.10_Ubuntu'
You're using completely missmatching version of the Guest Additions
  • You need to update the guest additions to match the host VBox version, so 5.0.2
  • You must not mix guest additions coming from the distro repositories and an official version of VirtualBox. Make sure to uninstall the old ones and use the ones included in your VirtualBox installation (see user manual for more details)
00:00:10.886629 Guest OS type: 'Other_64'
00:00:13.625346 RamSize <integer> = 0x0000000012c00000 (314 572 800, 300 MB)
00:00:13.626620 VRamSize <integer> = 0x0000000000600000 (6 291 456, 6 MB)
You need to change the guest OS type to Ubuntu (64 bits) as VM settings are optimized for it
And I don't think you'll go far with 300MB RAM and 6MB of video memory in this day & age...
Beware that your host has only 1.5GB of RAM free when starting the VM, so I would give 512 MB to the VM and 12MB of video memory.

Tried to follow the instructions for loading the 5.0.2 guest additions. Got the following error:

Code: Select all

Failed to open virtual machine located in C:/Users/James/.VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml.

'' is not a valid Guest OS type.

Result Code: E_INVALIDARG (0x80070057)
Component: VirtualBoxWrap
Interface: IVirtualBox {0169423f-46b4-cde9-91af-1e9d5b6cd945}
The file was an Open Office .xml file. While the instructions said to look for a .iso file. No .iso file on the host, the I: virtual disk containing the guest OS is the only .iso. :?

Sorry about posting in the wrong place. Which would be the best place?

Not sure which instructions you followed, but clearly not the user manual ones or the tutorials on the forum. Why would you use something open office related? This has nothing to do with VirtualBox.

I assure you there were good, though unclear, reasons for doing what I was doing. The VM presented the Open Off. file to me. It contained VM looking stuff. It didn't make sense, but I tried it.

If you had read and understood the original request - in particular that I am a noobie to VM - you might have stopped a the end of your first sentence. Not helpful, but at least not insulting. /end flame/

Now try for a helpful response.

You seem to missunderstand my response: I actually expect an answer to the questions I have asked. They were genuine and not an attempt to make you sound stupid or insult you.
Rather to actually understand how you got from VirtualBox to OpenOffice: If there are tutorials out there that could lead you in that direction, I want to know!
There is no reason to think you would be the only one with this problem then.

Have you actually tried following the steps of the link I gave you? Being a noobie to VMs doesn't stop you from following the instructions. Don't forget: a VM is just another computer.

I did answer the question. The VMbox made me do it!

I will look at the tutorial, having exhausted the VBox manual, not written with 5.0.2 in mind.

I have actually gotten further in my quest to test-run a Linux system to find out what all the shouting is about. It involves setting the Additions.iso and the MC.iso in some order (I just know when it works, the guest proceeds to a working version of itself), but after a half-hour of productive exploring the guest stops responding to the mouse inputs, logging stops with no obvious (to me) errors and the only end I have found is a power-off.

I am composing a new note, but the example log is too long. Will work on that. Thanks for your help.
