This is odd. I had no problems with getting to the network using NAT when I had Windows 2000 Pro installed, but I used a Windows XP with SP3 iso file to install WinXP in its place, and WinXP won't recognize any network setting I try. I'm not sure what to do about this. So rather than waste a lot of time, I decided to post here and see if anybody can help. I've a number of things I could try, but I am also trying to hold off from just wiping the image with a reformat, as I don't want to have to go back and replace everything that my user has on there.

Through the magic of the Virtualbox GuestAdditions, I xan make use of a full 1600x900 resolution screen. Makes the desktop Icons mighty small though. However, I can either specify a lower resolution, or I can change the desktop icon size and vertical/horizontal spacing. Something I also had in Windows 2000, but not in Windows 7. In Windows 7, I haven't even figured out how to increase the cursor size, something that I could do in Linux (specifically Ubuntu).

With each new release of Windows, there seems to be less and less to like. My two-day experience with Windows 8.1 was the pits. It drove me near crazy with all the screen changes as my hands moved among the keys and over the touchpad. I've now got what HP refers to as an "island" keyboard, where there are spaces between adjacent keys. Does not look or feel like a tighter keyboard layout, and your hands have to flit around as you target keys with just two fingers. Win8 turned that into absolute mayhem on the screen.

Win10 is suppose to be a free upgrade from Win8, isn't it? How is that suppose to happen? MS contact you, the vender contact you, rhe OEM contact you, or are you suppose to do something? My wife asked me, as she has her own laptop, and I had no answer for her. Wives don't like that much. Only thing worse is to try and tell them something they already know.

Windows 2000 and Windows XP have different default NIC adapter settings.
Windows 2000 is configured to use Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop, whcih is not compatible with Windows XP.
If you used the same VM, you will need to change the NIC adapter type to PCnet-FAST III and then try to install XP again.

Wow, That was quick. And precise. Tells me what to do and why to do it. What I don't understand, is why thus popped up? I had the Virtualbox Manager remove the files associated with my Win2k vdi, while leaving the vdi itself. I then renamed the vdi to WinXP. Then I set up a new client, WinXP, which the manager identified as being a Windows XP client to be installed. Then instead of creating a new vdi from scratch, I picked the renamed WinXP.vdi file. Then I went through the setups, including having the optical drive recognize the iso file. Then I booted from that image abd had Windows XP install itself in place of Win2k without reformatting. What I don't see is how a Win2k setting bled over to the WinXP install. That just doesn't seem to follow.

But it will look for the setting and give it a shot. Can't do any harm, and might be just the ticket. Let me try that now.

Okay, I'm back. I found the setting under Network/Advanced. I first tried PCI III, bit that didn't work. I then tried PCI II, and that did work, Problem solved. I didn't know about those settings before. I will have to try to remember that. Thanks a lot for the timely and on-the-mark help. It is much appreciated.

Strange it wasn't set properly. Without seeing exactly how you've done it, it's only speculations at this point. But it's solved and it's the most important!
