External network adaptor / OS X / Kali Linux issues

Hi,

I'm running OSX on a Macbook pro with virtual box and Kali-linux and a Panda single band wireless external adapter. What I want to do is have Linux see this adapter and use it for the internet connection rather than the internal card as it is doing at the moment.
What I've tried to do is in the network section change the "NAT" selection to "Bridge mode" and then select the USB adapter in question but when I boot up my Kali Linux it has no net access at all and does not see the card. Since I have no idea what the proper way to do this is and I'm just guessing, I'm not surprised it hasn't worked. I'm not sure if I will need to install drivers in my Linux for the external adapter or if this is not necessary because of the way Vbox works. If anyone can instruct me on any of this or else direct me toward some instruction that will save me a huge headache. I will also need to do this same process for windows 7 but one thing at a time..

You need to create a USB filter for the device.

Thanks. So I managed that ok and now a few more things happen. One of which is now TWO "Wireless" selections are available in my network prefs in Kali Linux and my network is detected seemingly if I add it manually, however when I go put my details in there and WPA password it just denies them and keeps asking for the password, which is confusing since both the password and security method are definitely correct.

In the command line however if I do a : airmon-ng
the interfaces that show up are:

phy0 wlan0 (driver) mac80211_hwsim (chipset) Software simulator of 802.11 radio(s) of

ph1 " " (Same as above here.. not sure why there are two interfaces or why the chipset is simulated??)

To reiterate, in my VB settings I have the network adapter set to: "bridged" and my card and also the USB filter set up.

One thing that concerns me in the documentation is this statement:

"On newer Linux hosts, VirtualBox accesses USB devices through special files in the file system. When VirtualBox is installed, these are made available to all users in the vboxusers system group. In order to be able to access USB from guest systems, make sure that you are a member of this group."

I haven't done this.. How can I make myself a member of this "group"? *pulls hair out*

Code: Select all

sudo usermod -aG vboxusers <your username>
then relog

Also keep in mind that you may need to install Linux Firmware on the guest if it is not pre-installed ( default is not installed ) and that you will need to have an access client that they support.

These are questions that you will need to ask them though as it is outside the scope of this forum.

No worries and thanks anyway.. eventually figured this out myself.. Just for anyone running into these issues in future.. Didn't need to add myself to group in the end or add firmware or anything.. The thing that was causing the issue ended up being the drivers for the wireless card on the Mac. All I did was uninstall the drivers using an uninstall utility (in this case the one that came with my Panda card) and then set the VBox off bridged mode back to NAT and then had the USB filter set to my external card. Then bam. Everything works a dream.

The slight annoyance of not being able to use the internet via the card on the Mac at the same time as on the Virtual machine I can live with.
