Remote RDP session via Windows PPTP VPN fails

Post by jgdempsey_harris »

I have a 64bit Windows 7 Enterprise(service pack 1) Guest (with the latest updates) running on Virtual Box 4.3.30 r 101610, on a 64bit Windows 7 Enterprise (service pack1) host (with the latest updates) that I use for remote support for our clients.
This is via a bridged connection to the Host wired Adapter (Intel I217-LM).

I have two clients that I connect to via Windows PPTP VPN (their choice, so I have no say in it), after which I need to connect via RDP to a Windows desktop machine. In both situations, RDP fails, after inputting my credentials, with the error "An internal error occured" (very descriptive isn't it).

If I attempt the same connections via the host machine, I do not get the error, so the issue seems to be with Virtualbox or it's configuration.

I have tried a couple of other clients with RDP capabilities (Royal TS, and mRemoteNG) with the same result(probably using the underlying MS RDP software anyway).

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I was able to solve the problem.
I had two network adapters enabled on the VM (Wired and wireless) and had attempted to switch between them depending on whether I had a wired connection available or was using wireless. I disabled the second adapter, and then just switched between the different host interfaces on Adapter 1 and I was able to connect to the RDP session via PPTP VPN.

It also solved a problem I was having with connecting from the VM to the outside world via the wireless interface.

Very nice of you to have posted the resolution when you found it, most people don't bother. It is useful information.
