Restore Guest Display After Inadvertent Error

Hello,
Running VB version 4.2.16 with Guest Additions on Windows 8.1 host with Windows XP guest. I inadvertently hit the X to close VB while the guest was running. VB brought up the cancel or close machine box and I clicked on cancel. After that, my guest display was completely blank only showing Windows XP desktop background (in my case solid black). No start button, no system tray, no desktop icons, no nothing. Hitting the Windows key on the keyboard did nothing, I tried a couple of the options under the View menu item in the VB toolbar with no result. I finally just hit the end VB X again and did a restart of the XP guest without shutting it down first. BTW, I also tried the Insert Ctrl-Alt-Del command menu item on the off chance I might be able to see Task Manager to shut down the guest first but no luck there either. Luckily, the close of VB without shutting down the XP guest did not cause any damage to the guest. Is there a proper method for restoring the guest desktop display completely if one inadvertently clicks on the close VB X icon by mistake? Thank you for not pointing out the obvious "Don't click on the X if you don't mean it." response.

I have the same problem with windows xp guest and windows 10 host. The display in xp went blank showing only the desktop background with no shortcut icons, start button or anything. Also I can't even use control+alt+delete without going into the host task manager. Help!

I removed the Windows XP Pro from virtual box and reinstalled it. And that solved the problem. The display is fine now.
