USB vdi...HELP!

Okay, so I successfully installed Windows 10 on a NTFS partition of my USB external drive. Everything worked great! A few days later, I plugged in my usb drive, ejected it from my Mac OS (so that it is accessible to my VirtualBox), made sure the vdi file was in the root directory of the Windows partition and that my USB device is accessible to VirtualBox and...

"FATAL: Could not read from the boot medium! System halted."

I know that I should know what to do, but I am stumped!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Perhaps I should summarize my question in this way:

Is it possible to create a virtual machine on a usb drive and then be able to plug it in later and use it as you would on a hdd? If so, how?

Sure. Just install the guest to the USB device but the VirtualBox program must be installed on the host. There are some things to watch out for though. The guest will show not available while the device is not active and do not pull the device while it is mounted or you can loose the guest due to corruption.

Fantastic! Thanks for your help.

I got it to work. I had to add an IDE and point it to the VDI on my external. Seems like it is working great!

Thanks for your help.
