windows 7 host: fedora 22 guest networking issues

I have an issue with networking in a vbox guest.
I have arrived at the point (several times) where I have Fedora 22 running as guest in the virtual environment (5.0.0 r 101573). I installed the guest with live.iso on windows 7 enterprise. I've tried a few different network configurations (NAT/Bridged) and arrive at the same point. The networking sort of comes up. It gets an IP address, it figures out the correct DNS address. I can ping the box from the host. I can ping nothing from the guest. The ping command does have a successful conversation with the DNS and does obtain the remote IP address to send ping packets to. Ping then forwards the packet but it never gets a reply.
From this I assume the HW visualization is properly configured and working. Some protocols seem to work (address resolution) - but incoming udp are going to the bit bucket. But if I knew what I was about I'd have this running by now.
Happiness for me would be for package updates/installs to proceed and HG commands to succeed. A web browser would be nice but not necessary.
current config
Adapter 1: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (Bridged Adapter, Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit controller
x Enable Network Adapter
Attached to: Bridged Adapter
Name: Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller
Advanced
Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (8254OEM)
Promiscuous mode: Allow VMs
x Cable Connected
Adapter 2: Intel Pro/1000 Desktop (internal Network, intnet)
x Enable Network Adapter
Attached to: Internal Network
Name: intnet
Advanced
Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (8254OEM)
Promiscuous mode: Allow VMs
x Cable Connected
Windows is barking at me that I need to install/enable a firewall so it is my belief that none is running on the box right now. The box is in a corporate managed environment. As far as I can tell there is no proxy (control panel to LAN settings pop up Use a proxy server is not checked).
