Add multiple screen resolutions Win7 host OSX guest

Win7 host
OSX 10.9.5 guest
virtualbox 5.0
I've found various ways to change the screen resolution for OSX by editing org.Chameleon.boot.plist and issuing command line
vboxmanage setextradata "Name of virtual machine" "CustomVideoMode1" "1920x1080x32"
However what I'm trying to do is slightly different. I have an external monitor on my laptop and normally will use the larger display. But when I'm only using the smaller laptop display, I need the lower resolution.
Can virtualbox supply the osx guest with multiple resolutions so that I can use the Mac System Prefs/Display to select whichever one I need?
