Upgrading Windows 7 guest OS to Windows 10 fails

Post by lblake »

Host OS is Windows 7 Ultimate. Clean install of Windows 7 Pro as guest OS. Do the Windows 10 upgrade by attaching the upgrade ISO to the VM. Upgrade fails with "Something happened" and "Windows 10 installation has failed".

Moved to "Windows Guests" since the host is irrelevant to the question asked.

Did you activate the Win7 guest first? It isn't a valid upgrade if not.

Yes, the guest OS is activated. Have also tried uninstalling guest additions with no difference. The installation does the preliminaries - checking for disk space etc. But fails when the actual install starts.

With the Iso created from mediacreationtoolx64.exe it doesn't work, so I tried with the iso from msdn, in my case I used "es_windows_10_multiple_editions_x64_dvd_6847131.iso" and worked perfectly, and the activation es permanently.

Any solutions for those without MSDN access?
