Display driver forbids win 8.1 to 10 upgrade

I want to update my last windows (if anything else fails-type) vm from 8.1 to win10. The automatic update says it is not possible, because virtual box's win8 display driver is not compatible.
Deleting it in Device manager has no effect, same as playing around with hw accelleration settings. Changing the win 8.1 Pro vm to win 10 - type also has no effect - I get told my display driver is incompatible. This is sooo odd considering it's only a vm...

So, how can I force-upgrade? I am in the meantime trying the "media creation"-type clean install approach (keeping the old installation is not important, there is a bunch of portable apps and not much more). But even fedora is simpler to update then the microsoft bloat-os. The image download is idling at 6% completed. What an epic fail!

Download the correct Windows 10 ISO for your installation and do the Upgrade using that or use the MS Media Creation Tool to kick start the Upgrade.

You can safely ignore the error message as Windows 10 is known to work with VirtualBox 5.0, but make sure you make a Backup Copy of your VM just in case of any problems with the upgrade process. It takes a long time to complete (2-3 hours). Also, you may need to attach an external USB Drive to your VM to complete the upgrade unless you have at least 8-10Gb of free virtual disk space.
