Win10 requires VB5?

Am I right in thinking that a Windows 10 host will require VirtualBox 5 to support VMs?

In fact, AFAIK Win10 is not a supported host for any version of VirtualBox, including v5.0. It may work, it may not. Now that Win10 has formally been released that will no doubt change soon.

(For future readers, I expect the linked section of the user manual will change over time. At the time of posting the supported Windows Host OS's were listed as follows :-

Code: Select all

Currently, VirtualBox runs on the following host operating systems:

    Windows hosts:

Windows Vista SP1 and later (32-bit and 64-bit[1]).
        Windows Server 2008 (64-bit)
        Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)
        Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
        Windows 8 (32-bit and 64-bit)
        Windows 8.1 (32-bit and 64-bit)
        Windows Server 2012 (64-bit)
        Windows Server 2012 R2 (64-bit)

Notice also that like Win10, XP is not a supported host for V5, however so far for me it works fine).

Thanks for pointing out that information.

Isn't it amazing I have been using VirtualBox for many years but had never bothered to check it.
I sincerely hope that a version of VB will be made available as I have a number of Win 7 Guest VMs that I am going to need because some of the software I am still using does not work in Windows 10 because of the software's age.

I have not yet upgraded my main machines to Windows 10 but will do so before 29th July 2016.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. There were a couple of problems with VirtualBox on some of the pre-release versions of Windows 10, but the release version and Virtualbox 5.0 have not presented any problems for me so far.

I am very wary of upgrading my main machines (2 PCs 1 Laptop) to the full Win 10 until I can be sure that VB is fully supported. I have too many legacy software systems which run in Win 7 and I need them. If I can be sure that VB 5 on Win10 will work I may give it a go.

It shouldn't be a big deal. Do a whole disk backup (e.g. Acronis) of your host system drive before the upgrade, and don't activate activate Win10 (or anything else) until you're sure you don't want to go back.

If you only need NAT, it so far works fine. Bridged and host-only are broken on different levels on my machines.
On my worst-case laptop, neither bridged, nor host-only network interfaces are working at all. No change after upgrade vs. clean install of Windows 10.

So really, how well it works for you will depend on your system. Win 10 also does allow do downgrade to the previous version for 30 days after the upgrade, should it not be working for you.
