VDI already exists

Post by thany »

I was going to create a new VM, but while creating the VDI file it gives me this error:

Code: Select all

Failed to create the hard disk storage D:\Virtual Machines\Windows 10\Windows 10.vdi.

Cannot register the hard disk 'D:\Virtual Machines\Windows 10\Windows 10.vdi' {eb2e7fc5-cfec-452a-b689-17dbd65fe9a1} because a hard disk 'D:\Virtual Machines\Windows 10\Windows 10.vdi' with UUID {9d9cc910-6de9-4d49-9305-8f1c5fcf25df} already exists.

Result Code: E_INVALIDARG (0x80070057)
Component: VirtualBoxWrap
Interface: IVirtualBox {0169423f-46b4-cde9-91af-1e9d5b6cd945}
I assure you, Neither the vdi file nor the directory existed before starting the VM creation wizard. After dismissing this error, there is a 2MB vdi in the right spot, so it did create something, but then also errored that it "already exists"? How can that happen?

This is VirtualBox 5.0.0 on Windows 7 x64.

/edit If I give it another filename, it works fine. Is there something intrinsically wrong with the filename "Windows 10.vdi"?
I'm probably running the latest everything. Yolo.

Have you formerly had a file of this name that was deleted but not fully removed from VirtualBox's list?

Look in Virtual Media Manager. If the disk exists, release it if necessary, then remove it. After that, try again.
