Trying to run windows XP under windows 10 fails

Hello all, I am trying to run a windows xp VM under VirtualBox 5. I can't get the VM to open I get the error message failed to open the VM with the text
The virtual machine 'Win XP' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1). More details may be available in 'C:\Users\joshj\VirtualBox VMs\Win XP\Logs\VBoxStartup.log'.

I would like help solving this. I didn't shut the VM down when I moved to windows 10 which required a reformat of my C: drive to install due to space requirements. my VM uses a disk image stored on a USB stick named Win XP.hdd
