Windows 7 guest on OSX host - boot selection failed

Hi,
I’m running virtualbox 5.0.0 on OS X 10.10.3 host system.
I created a virtual disk vmdk file of Windows 7 on a Dell laptop using VMWare vCenter and created a VM in virtualbox.
However, I’m not able to boot up the VM, basically the error is:
Status: 0xc0000225
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.
I have tried hitting F12 to boot from the hard disk, no difference. I’ve tried all 3 types of storage controllers (IDE, SATA, SCSI) and do have “Enable I/O APIC” set on the system.
Any suggestions on what else to try? Is there any tool or information (run a command line to provide info on the vmdk file) that might be helpful?
thank you
