Failed to create the VirtualBoxClient COM object.

Post by Konstantin »

Hi everyone! Desperately need your help.

I was running (for a long time) VirtualBox + Vagrant setup on my macbook.
I was using MacBook Pro 17 mid 2010 Core i5 but two weeks ago I switched to MacBook Pro Retina 15" mid 2015 Core i7 (might this be a problem?)

This error first appeared yesterday (July 24, ) Yosemite 10.10.4 with VirtualBox 5.0 and Vagrant 1.7.3. Then I tried to go for vagrant 1.7.4. Then downgraded to VirtualBox 4.3.
I repaired all disk permissions.

It starts to work after I restart my computer, but then crashes again.

Nothing helps. I even upgraded to OS X 10.11 El Capitan. And was able to work for like half an hour. But then it crashed.

The error code is: NS_ERROR_FACTORY_NOT_REGISTERED (0x80040154)

Two issues, one we don't support Vagrant, two, OSX 10.11 is in beta and Vagrant may not be compatible with it.

Yes, but I have this error on 10.10 Yosemite. And this error appears independently of Vagrant.

It is VirtualBox that is broken.

As I said, we don't support Vagrant. Can you run a guest without Vagrant?

I can not run VirtualBox .

Code: Select all

➜ ~ VBoxManage list runningvms
VBoxManage: error: Failed to create the VirtualBox object!
VBoxManage: error: Code NS_ERROR_FACTORY_NOT_REGISTERED (0x80040154) - Class not registered (extended info not available)
VBoxManage: error: Most likely, the VirtualBox COM server is not running or failed to start.

No, VirtualBox is not "broken". I have it running on 4 different Macs. One running OSX 10.11 and VB 5.0, two running OSX 10.10.4 and VB 5.0 and one running OSX 10.10.4 and VB 4.3.30.

Good for you. But it's broken on my computer. That's why I'm calling support.

First, we are not "support". This is a users forum made up of users just like yourself.

Did you use the uninstall tool before you upgraded VirtualBox? And did you upgrade the extension pack as well? The extension pack has to match the VirtualBox version.

Yes. I used an uninstall tool before upgrading. The one that comes with the dmg file.
And there's no extension pack for VirtualBox 5.0. Right?

There's an extension pack for 5.0.
Ok. I will wipe everything. Reinstall with this pack and see how it's going.

My /tmp folder is a symlink to a /private/tmp.
And clearing the contents of this folder didn't help.

Ok. I did some research.
Tried to run VBoxSVC

I start it with this command:
/Applications/VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS/VBoxSVC --auto-shutdown
Then I run the VirtualBox app. Then I close it. And the error appears.

Here's the console output and VBoxSVC log file.

Code: Select all

I don't know what causes this error…
00:01:23.284633 main ERROR [COM]: aRC=VBOX_E_OBJECT_IN_USE (0x80bb000c) aIID={4afe423b-43e0-e9d0-82e8-ceb307940dda} aComponent={MediumWrap} aText={Medium '/Users/kostya/VirtualBox VMs/komparu.dev/box-disk1.vmdk' cannot be closed because it is still attached to 1 virtual machines}, preserve=false aResultDetail=0
Perhaps someone else does. I hsve a feeling it's something Vagrant did.
