Hi, I'm trying to run a Windows XP guest on a windows XP host and seem to have trouble connecting to some websites. Websites such as Google and Youtube don't work and IE says the page could not be displayed and that it could not find the server or there was a DNS error.

Other websites, such as Bing, Steam and many others work fine. I set up the VM using the default settings and the version of XP is Professional.

I would love if you could help with this issue.

Have you done anything silly in the VM? I mean like trying to kludge the MAC address or IP address?

And what network mode did you configure in the VM settings?

The VM is a completely fresh install, I've tried recreating it several times.

My network settings are set to NAT

I'm not certain that answers my question. A bad network configuration is just as easily created after a fresh install as at any other time.

Don't keep recreating the VM - not unless you now understand something you need to do differently (and it needs a reinstall to change).

So, have you done anything like force the MAC address of the VM, or disable automatic IP assignment in the XP guest?

An XP guest configured for NAT mode should just work, provided it's a standard XP install, and you don't override any defaults, and provided the host has internet access.

Another thought occurs: you mention IE, but hopefully you aren't referring to the ancient IE6 browser that shipped with XP-SP2?

If so, try installing a more modern browser, such as Firefox. You can use the host to download the latest "Firefox for Windows" browser and put it in a shared folder for the guest to access (shared folders require you to install the Guest Additions).

Installing firefox on the guest seemed to take care of the issue, Dumb me!
