[Debian 8 - Testing - Stretch] VB 5.0.0 doesn't install

Post by Sagypt »

Hi all,
today I tryed to update my machine (Debian 8 Testing - Stretch - x64) with the latest software upgrades and, at the same time, to upgrade VirtualBox from version 4.3.28 to version 5.0.0.

First, I completely uninstalled VirtualBox 4.3.28 ... OK

Second, I updated my machine with latest software upgrades ... OK

Third, I tryed to install VirtualBox 5.0.0 ... KO

apt-get tells me that it's impossible to install VB because there are missing dependencies

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install virtualbox-5.0

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 virtualbox-5.0 : Depends: libvpx1 (>= 1.0.0) but it is not installable
Recommends: libsdl-ttf2.0-0 but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: linux-headers but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
There's a solution?

Usually an apt-get install -f will fix this after you try and fail due to missing depends. But this is an OS in testing and sometimes it does not have the necessary packages in their repo. or may not have back-ported the ones needed yet. Not much that VirtualBox can do about it. You need to ask them what to do.

A suggestion:
add jessie to list, then install previous version of libvpx1

add jessie to source.list
apt-get update
apt-get -t jessie install libvpx1
try VBox 5.0 installation again

Thanks for your suggestion, but I prefer to keep the file source.list clean. As last solution, I will install the package present in official testing repositories, currently 4.3.30

Dear Virtualbox,

Could you modify the dependence: libvpx2 > 1.4.0 by libvpx3 > 1.5.0 ?
The recent distribution doesn't have libvpx2

On my side : ubuntu 16.04 , it s only : libvpx3 / 1.5.0-2ubuntu1

Let's see:
• 5.0.0 - Does not apply.
• Debian - Does not apply.
• libvpx2 - Does not apply.

Frédéric, why did you post in this thread and did not start a new one? Please start a new thread with full details of the problem. Thanks.

Hi

Feel free to remove my previous comment and this one ( It was the first result / thread of google search or qwant )

But I solved my issue.

Even if I am in ubuntu 16.04,
My virtualbox dependence was creating on 15.10. ( before upgrade )

In the
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/virtualbox.org.list
I had : "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian wily non-free contrib"
wily name, but I am in xenial 16.04

By Changeing to
"deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian xenial non-free contrib"

The dependance is solved
