Using shared folders and drag 'n drop in VBox 5.0

I've just installed VBox on a new Windows 8.1 laptop (soon to become Win 10). I need to run certain 16-bit programs, so I used VBox 5.0 to create a virtual WinXP installation. It seems to work well! I also installed the Extensions Pack for version 5, which I assume is a new name for the Guest Additions. But I can't get interaction between the host and the guest working as I hoped:
1. I can't access shared folders from my WinXP VM.
2. drag 'n drop doesn't work between the Win 8.1 desktop and the WinXP VM.
Perhaps I have missed something obvious but I can't figure it out. I spent a few hours looking through the VBox documentation and I couldn't find an answer. Can anyone suggest what I need to do to get these things working?

regards, Vic (aka Boops boops on other forums)

The Extension Pack and the Guest Additions are two different things. You still need to install the 5.0 guest additions in your XP guest (in Safe Mode).

Extension pack is installed in the host for extra ( not open source ) features. The guest additions are installed in the guest for performance and video features.

See chapter 4 in the manual for explanation and what it includes.
