How do I remove all traces of an install

Post by jimindt »

I'm trying to remove all traces of previous Windows 10 Tech Preview installs on VBX so that I can do a clean install of it. I'd really like to get W10 running again, and none of the suggestions in any of the posts about how to get it to work are getting me anywhere. My thought is to drop back to some much earlier version of VBX and run it from there.

I've done the procedure where you click on Machine>Remove. The seems to remove the installed W10 software. However, when I reinstall W10, it isn't going through all the same steps that it went through initially in the W10 install. For example, I don't get asked What kind of install do I want.

That suggests to me that not all of the W10 prior install got deleted, and there are traces of it somewhere out there. I looked in the VirtualBox VMs folder and there is nothing in it. It's gotta be somewhere. Any idea where that might be?

I'm running Window 7 Pro 64 bit with all of the updates.

Just delete the VM. A host is not altered by the choice of guest OS. Make sure to delete the physical files (the VM folder and its contents).

That's what I would have guessed, and I've done that, however when I reinstall I'm not getting the same splash screens as I did when I first installed. What are the odds that there's something in Registry?

Once you click on the create new icon, look at the bottom of that screen. Do you see a button that says expert mode or guided mode?

If it says expert mode then you are in the guided mode window and if it says guided mode you are using the expert mode. The button is to switch to the mode labelled.

You want to use guided mode so it needs to say expert mode in the first window.
