Windows 10 Insider on VB 5 - Not moving on from logo

Post by DevoUk »

Hi

I have had previous success with running various guests on my pc. So i wanted to review windows 10 install preview which has been released on the Microsoft website.
I now spent two days trying to work out why things aren't working out and trying various combinations and was wondering if someone who can point where things are going to the wall.

My base machine is an intel core 2 duo (E8400) on a P35 neo board with 8gb of memory running windows home premium 7 64 bit sp1
I upgrade Virtual Box to 5 and install the 5 extension pack.

Downloaded the iso off the microsoft web site and checked the SHA Windows10_InsiderPreview_x64_EN-GB_10162.iso

Created a box, using the windows 8.1 64 bit os, (even tho i have tried with the new window 10 64 which is now listed)

All that I get is a windows 8/10 logo appear on the screen a bit of hard disk flashing and then nothing, left it even overnight. Doesnt seem to be able to run the setup program

Tried all combinations, including setting cdrom and hard drive to ide, just incase a sata issue but cant see it.

Anyone had this issue, any ideas !!
Thanks

Please post a VM log file. Right click VM in GUI, select "Show Log", save "VBox.log" (only) to a file, zip file and attach here. Make sure the VM is shut down before you collect the log of the session.

Please zip the log next time, as asked.

I see nothing wrong in the log. You are assigning an uncomfortably large fraction of host RAM to the VM, but I don't expect that to be the cause of this problem. Likewise the fact that you selected the Win8.1 template instead of the Win10 one. As far as I can tell the VM ran well. Perhaps you need to ask Microsoft about the apparant stall.

Sorry about the zip file, i did do it but think i must have loaded the text file.

Thanks for your assistance
after a bit of playing and installing virtualbox on 3 other different machine including laptops, it is definitely something to do with the insider version of windows 10, as they all do the same.

I think i was confused since it was displaying a windows logo but now realised that was the image of the windows disk display that and not part of virtualbox
So for the moment i have given up on it, there might be another way around it .. but i haven't figured it out ..

Thank you for all your fast responses
It was appreciated

That is very odd. The E8400 should have no problems with this. I have had no problems installing any of the Insider builds in a vm on Windows 7 or 8.1 hosts from ISO or physical DVD.

I agree with BillG it is very odd. I have installed Windows 10 as a guest on OSX. Linux and Windows hosts without a problem.
