Upgrading from v4.3.12-9373 to v5.x - Looking for proper way

Post by HilltopsGM »

I am currently running v4.3.12-9373

I've been hunting around for some guidance on 'how' to do this properly and can't seem to find it.

Is the process the same as upgrading from one v4 build to the next v4 build . . . simply running the file - in this case: VirtualBox-5.0.0-101573-Win.exe ?

I did see one issue the upgrade from v4.x to v5.x here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=68858

Thanks for the advice.

I have found the manual for v5 here: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... Manual.pdf

I don't see anything regarding upgrading from v4.x.x.x to v5.x.x.x

Can I assume then that it is ok to simply run the VirtualBox-5.0.0-101573-Win.exe file to upgrade?

Thanks.

The usual advice is - with any software - if it's a major version upgrade then uninstall the old software version first. I would also advise deleting the old "Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox" folder. Then you can install the new version, making sure you have adequate permissions.

Thanks mpack.

I am a little surprised that this isn't really covered anywhere.

If I simply release the VM's and leave the *.VDI files where they are, uninstall v4 (& deleted the old "Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox" folder), install version 5, I should be able to reattach the *.vdi files to the new install.

If I do it that way, will the VM's and their 'snapshots' still work?

Thanks.

I said nothing about detaching any VDIs. That would be a pretty good way to screw up every VM, guaranteed if they use snapshots.

In fact I didn't mention the VMs at all. This is a software upgrade, not a data upgrade. Though a data backup is always a sensible move.
