Dear experts,

I'm learner struggling to setup network configuration on Oracle VM Virtual Box. I did google search tried to check for any doc's but no luck, would appreciate if you can help me to reply on these queries to fix them.

Oracle VM Virtual box version - 4.3

Host - Microsoft Windows 8

Guest - Oracle Linux 7

Database - Oracle 11g release 2

(1) At Oracle VM Virtualbox Manager option network, Do i need to create VirtualBOX Host Only Ethernet Adapter every time when we assign an IP address, If so what details need to be mentioned for IPV4 Address, network mask & DHCP server.

Oracle VM Virtualbox Manager --> File --> Preferences --> Network --> NAT Networks / Host-only Networks

(2) On the Guest machine option network i can see 4 adapters, Does each adapter represent an IP Address, what options i need to choose.

Guest Machine VM --> Network --> Network settings --> Adapters 1 - 4

(3) Assign IP Address to Oracle Linux 7 hostname

I did mess up during installation of Oracle Linux 7 would need to allocate ipaddress to my host name. I have updated ip address at /etc/hosts file but when i ping its not working. Could you please share steps.

(4) Need IP Address to connect from my laptop to Guest - Oracle Linux 7 --> Using putty, i tried to access from my laptop where Oracle VM is running to the Guest - Oracle Linux 7

(5) Need IP Address to communicate among the Virtual machines i.e between 2 or more Guests , Is there a possibility

Thank you so much

Nick

Cross posting is against the forum rules. Please don't do it again. In the meantime I have deleted the two duplicates of this topic.

Yes, in essence an IP address is assigned to each NIC, assuming the guest uses a DHCP protocol. Do not confuse NAT and host-only. A description of the various network modes can be found in the user manual.

my bad... i'm anxious to get a reply. This didn't answer my queries

I want to use static IP address & it is a test machine without DHCP server.

First of all, networking itself is a broad, vast and somewhat difficult area to learn by yourself, and all these sides are even more difficult in a VM environment, as there are no "simple" concept. You'll always use several concepts to build a specific networking mode. You definitly seem to strugle with the basis so I can only advise to first work on basic concept with basic hardware before going further. I'll still answer your question in a simple manner but futher instructions/help are out of scope of this forum.

No you don't need to create a new adapter. An adapter is a simple link (like a cable) to the VM. An adapter can have one or more IP, and an IP can be asigned to one or more adapter. There is no hard link between the two.
You add adapters because your requirements and your network layour requires it, not because you feel like it.
Basic configuration is one IP per adapter.

Guest Machine VM --> Network --> Network settings --> Adapters 1 - 4
As said above, adapter do not represent IP address nor IP address represent adapters. Adapters represent a physical link, IP represent a logical address.
The options you need to choose entierly depends on what you want to achieve at the end of the day. Tell us WHAT you want to do, we'll help you on the HOW.

You also need to configure the IP address on the adapter(s). The /etc/hosts file would only be used internaly for the VM, not outside of it. This is out of scope of the forum.

Best solution is to create a NAT network. Leave the default IP options and simply configure a port forward.
Make sure to configure the VMs to use that NAT Network.

If you are assigning the IP then IP assignment is the business of you and the guest OS, so I'm not sure what you are actually asking. There is not necessarily a simple one-to-one relationship between NICs and IP addresses. After all, that isn't true of your host, is it?

It would be up to you to ensure that the IP address used by a particular application is compatible with the network you need to participate in.

Perhaps an analogy would be useful.

Have you ever considered the function of zip/postal codes? The house is like the physical object, a zip code is a logical identifier for the house. It might seem to the layperson that there is a simple one-to-one relationship between houses and zip codes, but that isn't true. Zip codes can be changed and reassigned. It might refer to an entire site, one building, or one part of the building. Different postal operators could have different zip codes. The zip code is just a logical identifier that a particular operator (protocol) finds convenient at a particular moment in time.

You could assign an arbitrary zip code yourself, to your own house (or any other), but the difficulty would come in getting others to recognize the validity of that code, since it did the assignment outside of the usual channels.

So it is with IP addresses and NICs. The NIC is a physical device. It already has a one-to-one identifier called the MAC address. An IP address is the addressing mechanism used by the TCP protocol, which is a software layer a couple of steps up from the hardware layer. IP addresses are typically assigned by DHCP servers according to locally valid structural rules. It often is a bad idea to consider assigning your own IP addresses if you can avoid it.
