VirtualBox Host-Only Network is in Network Connections and enabled. How do I tell if it is broken?
I have attached a Windows 8.1 log file for your perusal.

The host-only will not give you the Internet, only host<>guest communication so that should not matter if it was working before. Like I said something changed. Given that you have been hacking the registry it could be something that you have done as well. No way to know for sure but the issue sounds like it is on/in the host. If you re-installed VirtualBox and that does not fix it then it must be a host issue.

I only hacked the registry after I couldn't get rid of the lavasoft crap. It went wrong ages before I even contemplated doing that. I think the malware has changed something but I don't know what. I will probably either refresh/reinstall Windows 8.1 or do a clean install of Windows 10 at the end of the month when it is released.
Thank you for your help anyway - it is appreciated!

I've been running into networking problems recently as well for some reason.
host: Windows 8.1 64-bit
guest: Ubuntu 14.04 (server)
VirtualBox 4.3.29 r101248
The network just conks out for periods of time and random intervals. Pings to a reliable IP address once-a-seconds look like:
Code: Select all
155
156
157
158
159
160
161
162
163
[gap]
188
189
190
191
[gap]
216
217
218
219
220
Note that the same pings from the Windows 8.1 64-bit host do not experience outages like this.

One issue per thread. Post yours in a new thread after reading
Minimum information needed for assistance and provide as zipped attachments the VM log file and the guest settings.
